About Us

The Tuscaloosa Housing Authority (THA) is a public housing agency created by resolution of the City of Tuscaloosa in 1951. THA is a quasi-governmental entity governed by a Board of Commissioners appointed by the Mayor. The property of THA is used for essential public and governmental purposes and is exempt from all taxes, including on all its purchases of supplies and services.

THA enters and executes contracts and other instruments that are necessary and convenient to the exercise of its powers. THA maintains contractual arrangements with the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) through which THA manages and operates its low rent public housing program and administers the Housing Choice Voucher Program (Section 8). THA’s development, modernization and rental subsidy programs are federally funded.

THA’s mission is to provide a high standard of safe, decent, and affordable housing to the low to moderate-income residents of Tuscaloosa.
